I live just a couple of miles from that location. Seriously.

That's eastbound 494 at W Bush Lake Rd -- known as "the Bloomington strip" southwest of Minneapolis, MN. The message sign is accurate. That is not a stretch of road you want to travel during rush hour.

If I can't get there from here, can i get there from somewhere else? and can i get to that somewhere else from here? if so, that would imply that i CAN get there from here, as long as i was willing to go somewhere else first.

Airlines have used this philosophy for years. i can't fly from St. Louis to Beijing, but I can fly from St. louis to L.A., and from there fly to Beijing.

so if i really and truly can't get there from here, then i must not be able to get there at all...

Those message signs are part of the Metro Karaoke Initiative. This photo was taken while R.E.M.'s "Can't Get There From Here" was playing on State Radio.

I drove this way today on my way to the gym. I noticed this photo is at least a couple of years old, before they widened 494 and replaced that bridge.

The Metro Karaoke Initiative remains a popular rush-hour phenomenon.

How do you deal with messages like this? Do you reverse and go back?

No. The only way to get there is to convince yourself that you are not really here.

The sign is distressing. It reminds of a subject line of emails I get for pills that offer to improve/enhance/elongate my sex life. Are you sure the signs aren't really subliminal messages directed to just go out and buy more viagra?

Btw, are there young children who access this website? If so you guys should be censoring some of the adult oriented stuff that gets said around here.

So just mentioning sex and Viagra are unsuitable for children?

It almost looks like the guy in the blue car in front is handling his GPS navigation system that's lit bright red and yellow, and frantically trying to find a way out.

I remember having that "you can't get there from here" feeling twice in my life. Once was as a young man driving a U-Haul truck with a defective electrical system in Manhattan, or rather, through Manhattan, trying unsuccessfully to leave. We think we heard the contents of a glass truck shatter when it slammed on its brakes trying to avoid me as I injected myself, Skywalker-like, through a tiny break in the Jersey barrier to freedom. We did not look back.

The other was the first time we came to DC to house-hunt. We flew into Reagan National after dark one evening, it was raining, we had a nursing baby in the car, and we had the most impossibly wrong directions to our hotel in Bethesda printed out from the Hertz kiosk. After a few laps around town, spinning around cloverleaf after cloverleaf, the baby was screaming in hunger, and we were frantic. Finally we saw a nice-looking hotel and paid top dollar to check in for the night; we found our way to Bethesda when the sun came out the next morning. Financial resources are a good thing.

Ah, that explains the road sign. It must be the manifestation of the Minnesotan dry wit. This also confirms my theory that people who choose to live in places like Minnesota and North Dakota have too little oil in their heads, which it makes it difficult for neurons to fire certain pieces of information, such as "There are places in the U.S. where you can be comfortable outside 10 months a year".
