HTTPS is secure. The data exchanged between you and the server is encrypted; if intercepted, no one will be able to understand it. But beware: HTTPS doesn't protect ports; if the server/client has security lacks, the data may be endangered by it. Think of HTTPS as the "security van".
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
