No, I'm not trying to be offensive.

Yes George Takei, commonly known as Mr Sulu from Star Trek married his partner. During the writer's strike I saw him described as "Gayer than two men having sex" and lets face it, he is very gay.

Hey, it's not my thing but I wish him well

I don't know whats gayer than two men having sex except three men having sex which is not quite as gay as being a fan of the band hansen which pales in gayness to the teletubbies. But I wish them luck.

editing: I posted in this thread because It was just one of the threads that happened to be near the top of all the other threads in MD at that moment. Its not like I saw the words "gayer than 2 men...." and thought HEY THIS LOOKS LIKE FUN MAN..I'm goin in!

That's quite a turn of phrase.

Fatter than an obese guy!

More alive than a not-dead guy!

Prettier than a pretty girl!

Lonelier than some lonely dude!

If you consider 'gay' as a culture, a sexual preference, mannerisms and more, then even excluding the privacy of his own room George would still be very gay

Back in 2005 he mentioned in a magazine that he was with his partner for 18 years. Even that was not really him "coming out", as he said he had been open about it for some time but just hadn't talked to the press about it.

So: congratulations to George Takei and his partner on finally being able to marry.

Andrew

Yeah, I know he's been out for a while now (even before the media made it a story), but making the decision to talk publicly must be really liberating for him.

George was raised in the era of "confirmed bachelors" and other euphemisms meant as discreet references to homosexual men. I'd have to find my old StarCon program to back this up, but I distinctly remember reading out loud the phrase "George is a energetic man with many outside interests" and my mother, a lifelong stage actress, responding, "Yeah, that's one way to call it."

Wide-eyed 12-year old naivete aside, I don't think George's personal life was so much a mystery as a fact occluded to anyone who didn't really care in the first place.

At the risk of taking this topic seriously, what does that really mean? I've seen and met the man on a few occasions, and have no idea what very gay vibe he supposedly gives off. I never saw him spit on the sidewalk or adjust himnself in full public view, so I know he's not a real man, but what is it that makes him very gay?

Possibly not 'very gay' but 'undeniably gay'.

Apart from the writer's guild strike, where I originally saw the quote directed at him, there was also his response to a basketball player's "I hate gay people" comment.

Why can't he be a 'real man' if he doesn't do that to himself? why would you define 'real' man as someone who only have the same sexual orientation as you? you are not homophobic are you?

Michael's post was an example of irony -- using tired stereotypes of men as uncouth, ass-scratching, beer-swillers to make his point.

Thanks, Bear.

Thank you, Arvind, for remaining open to understanding.

As I think is evident from this exchange, though, irony is a form of humor wide open to misinterpretation. It's also my favorite form. Couldn't resist this topic, but generally I won't visit here much.
