The difference here is that if the site is directly blocked, then working to actively bypass this block would easily be grounds for dismissal.

Yes, your case seems to be genuine and you claim to listen only to songs! but generally youtube has many more stuff including movies, porn clips etc., which could definitely have lot more impacts affecting the business! Moreover monitoring the *real* content being watched from youtube is an unnecessary headache for the network/system administrators. That's what it was blocked!

If you have an SSH account somewhere other than work (and what respectable developer doesn't?) you can use Plink to proxy to it and use it to browse wherever you want.
I often have to do this as my employer regards "hacking" websites as off-limits but I need to reference them to protect my employer from hackers.
As others have pointed out, circumventing the security restrictions put in place by your employer is probably grounds for dismissal.

You need to look into Pandora.com or last.fm if you want to listen to music!

Copy music in your local HD and listens songs.

Most of the companies are doing this to have better speed/bandwidth for official works.

There are lots of ways technically to do this, TOR or Onion routing proxies, etc. But since its banned, getting around it is likely to get you fired.

But you can also listen to music using raaga.com or musicindiaonline.com and not necessarily use youtube. They stream much faster.

It has got its own embedded player unlike musincindaonline.com, oosai.com, raaga.com which expects your machine have the latest version of Real Player or Windows Media Player
