Problem in Setting up Environment variables when installing java  RSS feed

Okay guyz i'm an amateur...just started learning java yesterday...i downloaded the exe from the net,went to properties of MyComputer---->Advanced----->Environment Variables
Now there are 2 types of variables...user and system
whose path do i change???

hey,

your post should be in the java beginners section ;-)

as far as i'm concerned, you need to add the java bin folder to your PATH variable ...

it should look like this

"other path variables;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_16\bin"

change the path to your java bin folder to match yours

Welcome to JavaRanch, and you appear to be in beginners now.
There is something in the installation instructions; you will find links in my post on this thread, 4th post, posted today. Look at both links, which you should find useful.

The installation page says to change both user and system PATHs. I suspect it is only necessary to change one; try system, then it is available to all users. If it doesn't work, check carefully for spelling errors (even the tiniest misspelling will cause it to fail) and set up user too.

I gotta install the JDK first,i had the jre only...
