I'm watching the Olympics and trying to figure out the name of what I'm watching. It's a team sport where the idea is to get a ball through what looks like a soccer (or football to the world outside the US.) The ball is orange and they throw it to each other to move it around the court.

This is the second day I've been watching this sport and the announcer assumes you know what you are watching. I guess that makes sense - when you are watching other sports they don't keep announcing the name of the sport.

I did check on nbcolympics.com, but nothing jumps out at me. I'm sure this would be easy to search for if I knew what it was called. (I'm really looking for the rules, but that's easy to find from the name of the sport.)

They announced it when xxx won the gold medal. The sport is handball another sport with different meaning in the US. When I picture handball, I think of this sport.

<omitted winning team name so there aren't spoilers for the few timezones where this hasn't aired yet>

Wow, I've never heard of the one you linked to.
Looking at results of last year's handball world championship I see no non-European teams that made it into the quarterfinals; that might explain why it isn't widely known in the Americas...

I watched the basketball finals this morning - Spain did quite well, I thought. Certainly gave the US a scare, pulling within 4 in the last quarter. They fielded a 17-year old point guard who has NBA written all over him; he was awesome.

Funny. That's what I thought about "real handball" this morning.
