Autosave or increase session timeout?

I will preface this by saying that I appreciate your efforts rebuilding the site. It is so much faster and it's good to see it using java now. I run a forum myself and I know how it is trying to work on them for free.

Anyways, I have lost my post several times (including, perhaps ironically, this one) b/c I pause and do some 'work' and come back to finish my post. Click submit, and poof, I get a login screen, whats more the back button yields a blank text area.

This is very frustrating b/c naturally it occurs when I have written a long post with lots of code and I lose it all.

In the past, I have incorporated autosaves which I don't think is necessary. IMO, the ideal solution would be to put a javascript 'pinger' that hits the server every 5 or 10 mins to keep the session active as long as the post page is open. I have done this before and will gladly offer my services for the bargain price of $5.99 / minute.

Seriously though, thanks for the site and keep up the good work!

Or you could click the checkbox that says: "Log me on automatically each visit"

I generally shy away from those. I could also not leave a window sitting for over 20 minutes. Sorry, it was merely a suggestion.

I mean that it would solve my problems. Assuming the session timeout is 20 minutes.

What I really meant though is that my issue may be 'solvable' in the current system, but the solution doesn't make it any better for the end user experience.

Again it was just a suggestion. Love the site.

You mean the end user who doesn't use cookies? I agree things would be less friendly for them. Weighing how many people are in that group, I suspect it's a small number. It's also a demographic who is likely to more conscious of losing content and would know to save the content in a text editor until done. By contrast, pinging the server uses bandwidth. Not much if you do it every 5-10 minutes instead of seconds. And there are many things we'd like to see done.

It is nice to hear the kind words about the site.

I wouldn't get very far on the internet without using cookies at all. I just prefer not to leave open sessions on my computer, which is not as uncommon (hence the checkbox).
