I want to write a program to wipe out all files on a hard drive that has been deleted by Windows. I know I need a way to insure I write to every unused sector to wipe out all traces of unused files. Does anyone know how I can do this? (I know there is commercial software to do this. This is a learning exercise dealing with low level IO for me)

You can't do that with Java. (The commercial software you refer to doesn't do it with Java either.)

Why?

I do also know C++ even though it's been a while.

Because Java doesn't provide any classes or methods to do that.
