Switzerland would be first to go; check if it still exists. People might not notice right away :-)

Hi Prad,

My understanding is that what they are producing in the LHC is no different to what already happens naturally with our planet and the cosmic bombardment it gets every day. They simply made the LHC so they could reproduce those natural interactions in a lab where they can trap and measure things .

That said, if Switzerland goes away in the next month or so, I bags a spot on the ISS

Largest particle collider conducts successful test

After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen at 10:36 a.m. (0836 GMT) indicating that the protons had traveled the full length of the US$3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider.

After all that hype and expense all we got two white dots on a computer screen

I really have a problem with this. Mini black holes? Come on. Get real !!

It is obvious that mini wormholes will be generated. Sheesh, the only way to get a mini black hole is to have the mini wormhole open up to a black hole !!

Of course:

The first beam was circulated through the collider on 10 September 2008 and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008.

They keep giving us mixed signals about what is to happen. I don't think its cool to keep us in limbo like unless they are trying to kill us with excitement.

So what was this whole experiment about at the end of the day? And when are we freakin supposed to die? I must say I was tad disappointed with what happened a day ago because I and many people in general had really gotten their hopes up.

I thought there were tons of tests to run. It would be kinda silly to spend billions to do one test.

Personally, I want to see them accelerate potatoes in the 18 mile loop. At that speed, it will cook and mash it at the same time.

Potatoes from first beam and Tomatoes from the other beam surrounded by some pepper and salt in between. That would be a great curry

A word from a classic of prediction:

Verse 10,49

Iardin du monde aupres de cit neufue,
Dans le chemin des montaignes cauees:
Sera saisi & plong dans la Cuve,
Beuuant par force eaux soulphre enuenimees.

Garden of the world near the new city,
In the path of the hollow mountains:
It will be seized and plunged into the Tub,
Forced to drink waters poisoned by sulfur.

From this point of view, talks about the disappearance of everything are exaggerated.

In a treatise on the hacking culture I read some 15 years ago I saw CERN described as a sort of driving school for hackers. Apparently they used to have weak security for a long time, before hacking and cracking entered public consciousness, and were used as an entry point into various connected networks by various and sundry characters, some of them quite unsavory.
