In both IE 7 and Firefox 3 on Windows XP, any page at all with applets instantly crashes my browser. In Google Chrome, it doesn't crash but it loads the page without applets.

java plugin for firefox = SE 6 U13
Java version = 1.6
Java console in Firefox = grayed out.

I've tried disabling and enabling different versions of the add-ons, but nothing makes a difference.
