How valuable/important it is to have a cover letter when applying to a job other than Curriculum Vitae? Normally it contains a breif description about the applicant ?

The #1 job of your cover letter is to show that you are not shotgunning your resume to everyone. At least half of the resumes that come in are basically spam. Your cover letter tells the reader "I'm actually interested in this job, I've done research about it." Any cover letter that shows that, I immediately print it and the resume for later reading.

Some recruitment agencies normally attach a cover letter to the resume they are faxing. You will be the best person to attach a cover letter. You can work with the recruitment agency to come up with a good one. Also, the cover letter must be customized to a specific job based on the job specification/requirements. So, more you know about the job and the company, the more targeted will be your cover letter and resume.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
