Deepawali is the original Sanskrit term, which means "lines/arrays of lanterns". Diwali is just a commonly spoken hindi shortform.
BTW, Diwala is another linked term, which means "going bankrupt". Diwali and Diwala are related in a way. Although the original purpose of Deepawai was to celeberate the home coming of Lord Ram to his home town Ayodhya, people also worship Laxmi, the goddess of riches, on Diwali. Diwala is probably a term derived from that.
