How much do you normally pay for electricity per month? Just interested to know.
It is about $20 - $50 here in Sri Lanka, while air conditioners are not used.

$25-$40 for an apartment without an air conditioner in New York City. (I'm sure houses pay more.)

This got me curious. I could ask you or look on the internet. Yahoo says $200-400 for a house. Whoa!

For us here in Bangalore, without air conditioners, 20$ (roughly converting from 1000 Indian Rupees) which I paid last month, was too much... I generally pay about 500-600 Indian Rupees, which is about 10-12 USD. Of course, I'm talking about a small house (3-4 rooms) with 3-4 members in the family.

Bear, I suggest to get your own power generator.

I'm seriously considering solar panels.

A/C.

And Texas electric rates are pretty high on top of that.

You should, that will be a good use of renewable energy, especially when world is leading towards global warming threat.

And I thought India is the only country with most hot temperature record in summer, at most 50 degree Celsius.

Interestingly, at my back home, they still had 5-6 hours load shedding because of insufficient power generation, resulting in 5-6 USD per month

$6 right now. The monsoons are here, so not really hot. The only gadget we have, which is continuously running, is the refrigerator. In summers, it goes up to $10.

We take efforts to be as eco friendly as possible. We got CFLs all over the place. In place of a conventional electrical water boiler, we have switched to LPG geyser. In summers, we use "wala" curtains. I am not sure what it is called in English. It is a kind of grass, like the Bamboo family, from which you can weave curtains. The idea is to hang this curtain in front of an open window, spray it periodically with water, and nature takes care of the rest. A very slowly revolving fan, helps keep the air moving. And yes, it has an awesome fragrance. Light up some candles at night, and you cannot have a more perfect atmosphere.

We also prefer, water cooled in earthen pots. Again, just put in a small bundle of "wala" inside the water and enjoy the flavor. Better than Vanilla or Chocolate!
And yes, we do not have TV. Instead we have opted to invest in books.

Recently, I had been to a place which used LED for lighting. That is the next one on my list.

Am proud of you namesake!

BTW, we pay around 5 to 10 USD p.m. Luckily we have solar heater installed - so that takes care of keeping bills low and we don't use/need A.C.
Earlier when I stayed with my floks we used to pay around 1 -25 USD (800 - 1500 INR) p.m. The consumption typically goes high in summers.

Yeah, but it's a DRY heat!!!

Seriously, I don't know what the humidity is like in Texas. I do know that in St. Louis, we can go weeks at a time in the 90-95 (32-35) range with humidity in the 90% range.

I don't know we've ever had $400, but i know we've been in the $250 range...

2650 square feet. 10 foot ceilings. One of the A/C units is over 25 years old -- I suspect it's the primary current-sucker.

Well, two years ago, during the same period my bill was only $8.

That's because the meter was broken.

When they replaced it with a working meter, they estimated my new bill at $34,000.

Yes, $34,000.

After 5 months (yes, 5 months) of wrangling, I got that reduced to $2K.

I hate dealing with the electric company (one of the reasons I'm looking into solar).

Despite daily 5 hour power outages, around 2200-2500 Rs in the summers and around probably 1800-2000 in the winters. This summer has been particularly bad with unusually low levels of rain and greater demand for power nationwide. Expecting things to get worse.

$4

I live in Hyderabad. Electricity rates are really low here. But I take care of not wasting power. I am using CFL all over my home. I never really felt need of an AC till date.

$50-80 brazillian reais per month. It doesn't raise too much on Summer anyway, Daylight saving time works pretty well here.
