How do you plan to initiate the sorting?
The RowSorter and DefaultRowSorter have some convenient methods which you can use. Check out the API

I don't plan to do sorting, I just have a method which should be called when the user drag and drop a column

Oh! My bad. I confused your post with something I was working on.
TableColumnModelListener is what you need. That will give you notifications for all events you require.
