what is the primary difference between jsp and jspx, other than xhtml compliant?

It has nothing whatsoever to so with XHTML. You can generate HTML or XHTML from either a JSP or a JSPX. They a re completely independent.

JSPX is not intended for hand coding. It is intended as an intermediary format within containers, or for JSPs that are to be generated by machine code where it's easier to build up a DOM in memory and then serialize it.
