I'm considering to use Struts for a international
web application. Which release should I use?
1.0 or 1.1 beta? How stable is release 1.1b2?
How other languages, usch as Japanese, are handled in the property file? Using uni-code?

Hi Mary,
The open source development process means that there is no guaranteed release date for 1.1 beta, so if you have a release date for your website and you are not allowed to deploy beta software, you should stick with 1.0
Otherwise I would use 1.1b2. I think it is stable, but you would have to monitor the struts-user mailing list to make sure you become aware of any problems when they develop.
Struts 1.1 is significantly better than 1.0
I think the Japanese property file would have to be unicode but I'm not sure. There is definitely good info on multi-language usage on struts's jakarta website, plus you could search the struts-user mailing list archive.

I do not think Struts can handle i18n problem
well for the languages of east asia countries
because of using property files. It is
the architecture fault of Struts.

On the struts user mailing list I have seen postings from Japanese and Chinese users who appear to be using it successfully. Why would property files cause problems?

Struts had some localization problems in release 1.0. I believe the main problem was in presenting locales customized to the user (that is, you could make a site that was ALL Chinese or Japanese, but not one what what Chinese to Chinese users, Japanese to Japanese users, English to English users, etc.). That was considered a major limitation, so the new Beta release has a lot of code dedicated to resolving that problem.
