I am into a huge project in which a chat forum is also needed. So i want to ask if it is better to write the whole code for the forum or just get the widget(html/javascipt code) from various sites and embed it in my application. Which is the conventional way according to the industry.

If you are doing a project and that is your job,I think you should use the widget(html/javascipt code) from various sites .Because this will cost lettle time.
But if it is just a chat forum you want to do ,I think it is better to write all the java and js code by youself

The "conventional" way is to choose what fits best according to your needs, skills, budget, etc.

You might need a lot of customizations that you can only achieve by coding yourself too ...

That depends on their policy. Most sites prohibit commercial use without charge.

That's weird; why is this in "servlets" if it's phpBB?
