First of all, make sure that you mark 'novice' in the survey taken by sun prior to the test(SCJP).
Don't ever mark 'intermediate' or 'expert' because the paper will become quite difficult and might be difficult to pass even.

I just read this tip at a blog and it made me worry even more about the test. Does anything I fill in the survey really affect the exam?

That is stupid. The SCJP is a uniform test that measures your understanding of the Java Language. If there were 55 different versions of difficulty, this would blur the line of the whole SCJP standard.

Whatever you choose in the survey, it's just for statistical purposes.

An incorrect "tip". There is no evidence to prove this and the only way it can be proven is if you take the exam a couple of times by selecting different difficulty levels each time, which is of course not possible.
