Hello,

What would be a typical answer to an interview question that says: " Why did you choose software Development as your major?"

Thanks

Well why *did* you choose software development? The question sounds pretty straightforward.

I don't think there would be a "typical" answer. Why do you ask this question?

Because you liked it ? Only you can answer that question.

This reminds me of a joke I heard once. A grand dad purchased a new pair of glasses for himself and tried them on. He then asked his grandson, 'Can I see better now ?'.

There is no right or wrong answer. Look at things like interest in cutting quality code, passion for writing code, challenges in solving problems, etc. The interviewer is trying to ascertain if you were pushed into this field or picked it out of your own interest.

This may be a difference between the US and other countries/cultures but I can't imagine anyone in the US asking that question for that reason. Rather they would ask it to understand what aspect interests you: analytical problem solving, creativity, design, seeing it come together, etc.

Or the candidate is coming across as quiet/nervous and I want to hear them talk more passionately about something. Especially if the candidate is still a student.

Obviously a bad answer (as are almost all short answers to open ended questions). It tells me nothing about the candidate. If you give this answer, elaborate and explain what specifically interests you about it.
