When I access a Tomcat server with username and password, where are these parameters stored ?

One option is to store them on database.
Is there any other way these parameters can be stored on server ? What file can they be stored onto ?

I am trying to understand the setup I am on.
When I provide username and password in a form, upon submit this form is submitted to prepareLoginFCC.jsp , whichnin tuen has code as follows

From the above code it appears data is sent to "GotoPortalPageUrl.createProtectedPageURL(request, response, "/login", "login.fcc", false)"

So actually where and how does the authentication take place ? Is it somewhere on the server only or is it on the database ?

If this looks very customized, please explain with some simple example, how it works in normal environment.
