Hi all,

My name is Shay and I am new here.

I saw this forum while browsing the web for information about Java and found it to be extremely useful for Java Programming and I immediately registered!

I wanted to embark on a career as Java programmer from now on. Hence I have to take the SCJP 6 exam (But I do not want to take the SCJA exam because it seems to be too basic ) and I will have to start studying Java since the beginning as I have no experience programming in Java (I know how to program in C though). After some research, I found the following as a good preparation for the SCJP exam:

1) Read The Java Tutorial: A Short Course on the Basics, 4th Edition by Sharon Zakhour, Scott Hommel, Jacob Royal, and Isaac first to get an overview of Java since I am new to Java

2) Then Read the SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065 guide which is the main guide for the SCJP 6 exam and which assumes the reader already has a basic understanding of Java

3) Finally prepare using the ExamLab for SCJP 6.0 just before the test.

I am planning to take the test in 3 months (around beginning December).

Could somebody please tell me whether it is a good preparation. Is there any other guide which I should use to better prepare for the test?

Sorry for the long post.

As for the SCJP6 cert goes, K&B SCJP6 guide is a wonderful book to prepare from. Also apart from Examlab, you can try out masterexam which comes with the book cd rom and also inquisition mock. That's all i suppose for SCJP6.

The best thing to do on top of the list you gave is to write A LOT of code. This reinforces what you have learned and actually trying things out builds a certain experience and confidence when writing code which will make you go through the process of studying and eventually taking the test much easier.

Thanks for your answers Nitish & Sebastian.

To Sebastian: You said it is good to write A LOT of code...but will these study guides not give me the opportunity to write a lot of codes?

Algorithm for passing with a very high score:
- read K&B book carefully, make your own notes (this will activate the left part of your brain),
- do as many mocks as possible (ExamLab and MasterExam are obligatory),
- read K&B book again - faster than the first time,
- buy a voucher, schedule your exam, go and pass with a score about 100%.

Good luck

C and Java are totally different programming languages. I would suggest getting an understanding of Object oriented Programming first and then concentrating on the certification exam. You need a lot of practice to know a language insomuch as to write [good] programs, so you need to get your hands dirty first.

Your list of books seems to fit your case well. You can also try reading "Head First Java" for introduction to the language; you will like it.

All the best!
