I liked the Head First Book and the Bridgewater Study Guide for the SCWCD

You may want to have a look at Head First Servlets and JSP. I used it and found good to build the platform.

Very little beyond how to set up a properly structured web app. But that's good! The database should be as far removed from JSPs as possible. Any book that is focusing on databases is either promoting poor practices, or using space that it should be devoting to JSPs to talk about something that is unrelated.

The one exception is any section that is covering the SQL JSTL tags. And even then, the book should be telling not to use them for anything but quick prototypes.
