Hello All,
I want to build a basic forum where in people can post, answer, search the queries.

Also, I want to manage the user authentication and maintain which user answered the most number of queries and some sort of notification whenevr a query user is intrsted in is answered.

What I want to know is which open source should i use.
Your suggestions are highely appreciated and awaited.

Thanks,
Manish Ramrakhiani

Welcome to JavaRanch.

How about JForum, which is the software underlying these forums right here?

There is a list of java based open source forum software here:
http://java-source.net/open-source/forum-software

If you do not restrict yourself to java, there are many good(better!) forum software written in PHP/Perl etc.
One really good one is PunBB (written in PHP): http://punbb.informer.com/

Thank you guys for your prompt replies.

using java is not mandatory, just that if I need to customize those then I will be able to do so comfortably in Java or JSP.
Also, The forum will be used internally in our organization for various stuff...like technical...functional etc..

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
