expression involving int or smaller

Hi all,
Can someone help me to understand following code.

   
       byte a = 4;
        byte c = 5;
        byte d = a + c; //#1
        byte b = ((byte)4.3) + ((byte)1.2); //#2
 

On line 1, it requires explicit cast to compile successfully, and that i understood very well.
But line 2 compiles fine besides both operands are byte. Then how come line 2 compiles fine?
Please explain why it is not required to cast at line 2 as follow-

   
         byte b = (byte)(((byte)4.3) + ((byte)1.2)); //#2

That's because both the operands are literals. So the compiler is able to find the sum at compile time and replace the expression with the actual result. If you try this

final byte b1 = 10;
final byte b2 = 20;
byte b3 = b1 + b2;

This will also work as the two bytes in the expression are compile time constants...
