Submitted post lost

Hi!

The forum "ate" my post.

Here is what happened:
- I went to https://coderanch.com/forums/f-51/Web-Services
- was logged in
- I middle clicked the "New Topic" button (Firefox, it opened the new topic page in a new tab)
- on the new tab/page I wrote a post (title, body etc..)
- I clicked on Submit
- I was presented with a login page
- I entered my name and password
- I was forwarded to the main forum page
At that point I went back to the Web-Services sub-forum and I saw my post was not there.

Luckily experience taught me to always save anything longer than 2 lines that I type, so I just submitted the post again.

Otherwise it would be very frustrating.

As I was already logged in, I'm not sure why this happened.

In any case please look into it, to prevent it from happening in future.

Regards,
David

There have been several threads about this sort of thing recently. On the login page, there's a checkbox that allows you to "stay logged in" -- check it when you log in, and you won't have this problem. Even without checking the box, if you're using Firefox, you should also be able to use the "back" button to get back to the post form, and find that your text is still there. IE users are unfortunately not so lucky.

Same happened to me today.

I only did not pay attention to it, I just thought the post got submitted after I have logged in. Only after some time, when I wanted to check for replays I have noticed no topic was submitted.

Kind of warning would bi helpful. If you are not aware you need to re-submit post, you will not go back in browser to copy and paste it back.

I suppose a feature could be that you submit a post and then the server says "oh, wait, your session has expired. I'll save what you wrote somewhere (cookie?) and then take you to the login stuff." A few seconds later, you submit your login stuff and the server say "yup, that login works. And look, there is a message for posting. I will route this to the message posting stuff."

So - this could be a possible software enhancement?

We tried to fix this in late September. Clearly it didn't work. I see why now. We are pinging a URL that doesn't exist:
https://coderanch.com/forums/ping_session.jsp

Which wouldn't keep the session active. I'll look into this later in the week or over the weekend.

I think it's fixed now.
