A rehearsed response will be seen through immediately by any even moderately savvy interviewer.

What are your career goals?

Anarkali:

There is no 'right' answer. As Bear hinted, what are your career goals? You don't need to map out every detail, since it is likely to change. You should put some thought into it, though. In my experience, having an idea about where you want to go career-wise is a definite plus.

i really can understand your puzzle. Many candidates are often asked about this question, actually, they just want to know if you have a clear career goal ,and if you are an aggressive man ,not a loiterer. I think you can say like this, after 2 years, you want to be a project leader, after 5 years,be a project manager or a software artitect, and so on.just from my point.May you have a good interview.Good luck.

I was thinking about it, and (at this moment) my career goal would be: "make boatloads of money by solving interesting problems with cool technologies".

For example,

next 1-2 years acquire experience in X, Y and Z. Acquire both technical and non-technical skills.
next 3-4 years become a technical lead or senior developer
next 5-8 years become an architect or get into a management role

etc. You will be the best person to work out your goals.

Arulk Pillais answer is good.

You can answer it slowly, as if you are thinking about it and answering .. lol.
