Hi,

We are in process of migrating from Solaris to Linux.

In the same time we are upgrading from Java 1.4 to Java 6.0.

We have autosys jobs, Java Swing code, RMI, etc...

Please share your experience and best practices in similar migration.

Thanks in advance.

I'd suspect that your biggest problem is going to be RMI. Objects serialized via JRE 1.4 are probably not going to be accepted by JRE 1.6 and I can pretty well guarantee it won't work in the reverse direction. So you're going to have to make sure everything's kept in sync.

As far as Solaris/Linux goes, with the possible exception in case you've been using the new resource startup manager that was introduced in Solaris 10, you probably will find some directories are used differently (especially logging), the /etc directory should NOT be used to contain binary items (that's a legacy from the Bad Old Days of Unix), and some commands may vary. Mostly the Linux ones just add additional options, but in a few cases like the "ps" command, there are more significant differences.

I worked for several years in a mixed Windows/Linux/Solaris environment and I'm still alive, and about as sane as I was when I started (for what that's worth).
