Hi all,

There is a rumour going around Sri Lanka that Sun is going to discontinue SCJP,SCWCD,SCBCD,SCJD,SCDJWS,SCMAD and SCEA by the end of this year.

Is this true?

Personally I don't think that this kind of great exams are going to be discontinued. So can you please validate this?

This is the first time I hear this, and there is certainly no official statement from Sun about this.
So, this is only a rumour and there is as of yet no evidence that there is any truth in it.

If it were true probably because Oracle bought Sun Micro... It is unlikely the Java certs will disappear but rename to Oracle certified blablabla. Also the prereqs may change.

Completely agree with this. There will be Oracle Certified Java Programmer...and in short OCJP, OCWCD....simply replace the S with O!

You all seem sure Java has a future since you are saying sun will continue with the exams. I am a little bit nervous about this. can anyone give me reason to believe Java will have a future ?

I think that "can anyone give me reason to believe Java will have a future ?" detours off into another topic entirely than this SCJP certification thread.

Hey! my first post!

Java is going to be used for decades to come. It is certainly not suddenly going to disappear within a few years. Don't take people who say "Java is dead" too literally. Look at COBOL, FORTRAN, C and C++ - languages that are much older than Java and are still widely used. Java will gradually become more and more mature and stable, but it's not going to disappear anytime soon. Learning Java and getting a Java certificate will be worth the time and effort for many years to come.

There's no reason to worry for your Java skills becoming obsolete.

IMHO, there is no "other side" in this debate. Any programmer worth his or her salt should know many languages (and have no problems switching between them in projects). The idea of worrying about any language, in the very long term, is just silly.

If the language disappears, there was a reason for it. If it decreased in popularity, there is a reason for it. And generally, that reason is something else, coming along that is better. This is like a millionaire worrying about not being a millionaire in the future, because there is a chance that he may become a billionaire.

Really?
Although I never heard this rumor before, I wonder who is spreading this type of rumors here in Sri Lanka.

@Devaka

Yes Devaka, some of my friends ask me about that since I am having sun certifications.I clearly told them there is nothing like that. But I decided to ask from Javaranch to make sure. Now I can understand that it is just a rumour and some people are spreading this for their own sake.No need to worry since Jesper has provided the correct answer.

If anybody asks this again then I will send the link of this discussion.

wow. A range of bizarre questions are popping up in this thread. Unless you hear it from the horse's mouth, you dont have to worry about it.

There are no more "hours", it's centi-days. They say it's better, but this tiny ad says it's stupid:
