Hi all,

I was a Java (Web) Developer with 5 years experience with a S/W Service Company.

The certifications I have are in Banking and Securities since I had to meet client cutoff criteria for my previous job. No Java certifications. However have studied SCJP, SCWD, patterns books / guides to improve my knowledge.

This year I took up an offer as a Sys Admin role (WAS Portal / CC). I had been on the look out for a job closer to home for quite some time.
It took the job offer to be closer to my family.

But since I have moved from development to operations how do I plan my career? How do I weigh the pros and cons of each profile?

WHAT are the things I should be considering to evaluate my current position and plot proper a course for the future?

All comments and advice are greatly appreciated.

Nishad:

A few questions to ask yourself to start out with: What do you want to do? Where do you want to be in five years? 10? 15?

I don't really have a good answer for you... but...

Twenty years from now, when you look at the decisions that you made, that affected your career, many of them are probably not that important. You may even have forgotten about most of them. Except this...

will likely be remembered as a very good decision.

BTW John, I am not so sure as to what i want to become. I have a mixed bag of experience from Development to Business Analysis, I took what ever came my way.

Now the admin is a great learning experience. A lot of things that I did not get to learn and understand are open to discovery.

Also, my last manager asked me this question "So do you want to do?", but then I was not too sure and now...

Well.....thanks for all the input...

Till I have some kind of Newtonian revelation. I guess I will take things as it comes.
