What does "outside the applet tag" mean - where does the value exist? In JavaScript on the same page? In a JSP page on the server? Somewhere else?

Please also elaborate why the solution hinted at by Rayapudi Murali Krishna isn't suitable (which I'm assuming is the reason you're asking for another way).
