I wanted to know if anyone was aware of any open source tools which perform application mining. I am working on COBOL (don't freak just yet) to Java J2EE conversion project and would like a tool which can assist in the analysis of the legacy application (written in COBOL). There are lots of expensive COTS products such as Microfocus Relativity and Software Mining but they are very expensive and not meant for limited one off usage. So, with that said.... anyone have any recommendations?? Thanks.

I have done this twice, once with MQSeries, the other time around 2001/2 using CICS and a generated Java interface.
I preferred MQSeries but both were a long time ago.
CICS was against Java 1.2 and I wasn't a big fan of the generated code, but a lot can change in 7 years.
MQ was against Java 1.3 tunneling through excessive internal firewalls.

and third where COBOL exported VSAM files that were parsed by Java. No idea how that was accomplished.

You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
