Hi all,

I am planning to take SCJD. I went through the basic requirements in the Sun website and found out some of the topics I have no or minimal coding experience such as RMI, TCP/IP socket, records locking and etc. Can anyone recommend me some websites to read on to get started?

Thanks.

Regards,
Allan

Hi Allan,

The book SCJD Exam with J2SE 5, Second Edition is a good reference. Just as good is their code sample downloadable off of the publishers site. I also had some good java experience but nothing in threads, record locking or networking. I am finding the exam time consuming (very) but certainly not too hard. This forum, that book/code and a bunch of time is really all you need. Hope this helps,

Yeuker

Hmm.. the book SCJD Exam with J2SE 5 comes with a CD? I amazoned it but the cover of the book did not mentioned about this so I assume there is no CD for learning purpose? I am going to get this book anyway. Although it has only 3 chapters, but I think it covers most of my doubts and inexperienced in the threading, networking and GUI. And I shouldn't be judging the book by the number of chapters, right?

Are you talking about this book, the one from Andrew Monkhouse? It has 3 parts and 9 chapters covering all you need to pass the exam. Also it uses an example assignment to explain a lot of the problems you might encounter. It is a great book, so the only thing I can do is recommend it, because I used it myself It's a great starting point for technologies (like RMI, GUI,...) if you are not familiar with it. You can always look for extra tutorials on the web or help on this forum afterwards.

Good luck!
Kind regards,
Roel

No, it does not come with a CD.

We talked about that a lot when we first started work on the book. The publishers were in favor of a CD, however Max and I (and later Terry) were very much against the idea. By producing the book without a CD we were able to set a (relatively) low price point, whereas books with CDs automatically jump in price - usually somewhere between an additional 50% and an additional 100% in price. Given that the entire source code is under 500 Kb, we felt that potentially charging an additional $40 just for that CD would only cause resentment amongst our readers. Much better to have the source code available for free.

As Roel mentions, the book has 9 chapters. You can download the table of contents if you would like to see the breakdown by subject.

Good luck with your assignment.

Andrew

Hopefully, one day I'll also have enough power to write a book!

Meanwhile, I'm preparing an article about the SCJD that will be published in a magazine that is distributed all over Brazil. Other than mine, I'll also include some names there (Andrew and Roel) as references! I'll let you guys know when it gets published.

Ughh... I've placed an order and the ETA is 25th December. Looks like I'm getting myself a Christmas present. What a long wait!

In the meantime, I will just read articles and write codes on threads.

@Roberto: Please do inform us when you have the articles published.

Honored to have my name (as a reference) in such an article. Do you have to write it in English or Portuguese? I hope it will be English, because I'll be able to read (and understand) the article.

If I have to come to Brazil for an autographing session, just let me know. I prefer December, January or February because then the weather here in Belgium is very bad (lots of rain and temperatures below 10 degrees, even below 0 degrees)

Keep up the good work and one day I'll be able to buy your book in any store across the world!

Kind regards,
Roel

If you insist, I'll also come to Brazil in the northern winter months too! While I remember Holland being cold in winter, I was still able to ride my bicycle to work every day - I'm not going to try that here: I'm about to leave for work and it is -4º. Tonight it will get down to -12º. And December has barely started - it should start getting cold soon! Now let's see Roberto come back and tell us how nice and warm he is.

Howdy, guys!

Well, at this time of the year, it's hard even to sleep. At night, the weather is like 25ºC - 30ºC. It has been really really hot. Right now, it's a pretty sunny day, and I'm in front of EJB2 finishing the code started by other developers, running against time, and wondering how it would be if I was in Northeast Brazil (the most beautiful brazilian beaches are there), having a beer and eating some shrimp. The weather will stay like this until March or April next year. As you guys know, I live in Sao Paulo (there are no beaches here), but there's also Guaruja, which is about one and a half hour from here and also has some pretty cool beaches. There's also Rio de Janeiro, which is about six hours from here by car and is really really beautiful. Just let me know when you guys will be here, so I can arrange some rides and tours. Boy, it will be cool!!!
