Want to make wireless application, what area should I research

I actually want to make wireless application like I always see in modern restaurant. They are using some device like smartphone to record customer order and send it to the kitchen. Is there any recommended book or reference so that I can have little picture about what Im doing, or at least just tell me what area should I take a look..
