Although there is some disagreement, the general consensus is that something has to be pronounced as a word to be called an acronym. Acronyms are not constrained to being just the first letter of each word though. So, modem (from modulator-demodulator) is an acronym while TLA is not. URL might be or might not be, and JPEG is a weird hybrid. They're all abbreviations of course.

There's a tour company in Vietnam called Phuong Trang, which abbreviates its name as PuTa Tours. (See a Spanish dictionary to see why that's funny.) I believe that would still qualify as an acronym.

If I'm not familiar with an abbreviation, I look it up: http://www.acronymfinder.com/

In some parts of Europe (possibly other parts of the world as well) Mitsubishi sell an SUV called the Pajero. In Spain it has a different name (See a Spanish dictionary to see why)

Ah, I know why, but I'm not sure you can find it in a Spanish dictionary since the word is slang, and, IIRC, only in a few Spanish flavors. Nevertheless, Pajeros are call Monteros in the U.S. market because of the Spanish speakers here. In Viet Nam you could potentially see a Puta (tour bus) being followed by several Pajeros.

I'm pretty sure they're called Monteros in Spain as well.
I've been learning Castillian Spanish and one of the lecturers did tell the class about Mitsubishi's slight marketing faux pas (although I had heard it before).
It's certainly in my dictionary, but it is rather a large dictionary.

Iowa - Idiots out wandering around

Note I can say this, as I am an Iowan, and with the blizzard last night/today, I saw MANY idiots out wandering around. And yes, I was one of them.

More of a syllabic abbreviation, like Interpol and Gestapo and Komsomol.

One from Hindi:

TTMM - Tu Tera Main Mera

This means, you pay for yourself & I pay for myself.

It’s very common when someone asks you for a party.
