In internet browsers, there is a text input area that reacts to when the user types in a URL. The browser searches memory and completes the URL for the user so that the user does not have to type in the whole thing.
For example, with this home page, the URL is
http://www.javaranch.com
So if the browser has this URL in memory (and no other URL that starts with j), just by typing in
http://www.j
the browser fills in the rest of the URL.

What I want to know is, is there a class in java which can do a function like that?
By the way, is there a name for such a function?

Maybe you should look at an editable JComboBox

Better yet, look for auto complete in combination with a JComboBox. There are libraries around for that.
