Hibernate Performance - Direct JDBC connection?

Hi,

I am new to Hibernate performance tuning.
Could anyone tell me what is the DIRECT JDBC connection means?
say, If my datasource is using c3p0 connection pool with postgresl jdbc 4.0 driver.
My understanding is to use SQL directly rather than HQL and use Sateless session.

It implies I must iterate my fetched records manually.
There is nothing to do the datasource config.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

OR
Any better or easier way to improve performance.
