I have a sony ericsson w810i.

Is it possible to write an android application for it using java.
Also, how would one install such applicaiton on the given cell phone.

I don't think Sony w810i runs android so an android application would be meaningless for whatever platform your phone is running. However, if you intend to write an application for your phone, you should consider using J2ME

Ok
So you mean I could write a J2ME application and install it on my sony ericsson w810i

How would I install it?

Are there in help sites for developing J2ME applications?

Yes.

There are two main files that comprise a J2ME application: the zipped application JAR and a JAD(application descriptor) file. Installing a J2ME application could be as simple as copying these two files to a device-specific reserved folder. The Runtime system would then identify these files and install them automatically or you could do it through a tool(For e.g: you have Nokia PC suite for Nokia devices).

For a more detailed(and perhaps better) answer to your second and third question use the J2ME forum here on Ranch.
