Is there any command or combination of commands available on unix/linux to kill a java.util.timer?

A java.util.Timer runs in a
thread
inside the JVM. Therefore, I doubt that you can a) identity, and b) then kill this thread from outside the JVM.
Is there any reason you can't call cancel() on your Timer from within your application itself?
