I want to make a
java
web app that will access a secure aspx website and download any available files like pdf, jpeg, xml. I also have to know all the available files. What are the things I should learn, and where do I start? Thanks for the help.

It sounds as if you're talking about screen scraping. IMO, the best Java library for programmatic web site access is jWebUnit.
