Oh my god! People are posting FROM THE FUTURE!!! Guys, I live in 2009.....what should I invest my money in? I tried to get my flux capacitor to work, but I just can't generate the 1.21 jigawatts needed at 88 MPH to achieve time travel!

It's (almost) 2010. So where's HAL?

I want a HAL running my house.

Oh, wait...

I'm fairly youthful (being all of 24), and I totally got the reference. The spoof episode of Futurama where the Planet Express ship goes crazy is good, too.

Happy New Year.

And how could one not read 2001. (I have read both sequels*, but the first should be enough for the reference.)

* I first typed SQL here - guess what I did today.

I suspect far more people have seen the film than have read the book - and while that sort of thing may be lamentable in general, for this work I think it's just fine. For Clarke the author, I'd recommend one of his short story collections before his novels. For fun, count how many times a star is destroyed (or occasionally, created) as part of the plot. I'd suggest making a drinking game of it, but when you get to The Nine Billion Names of God, that's going to be a problem.

Also: turns out that there are actually three written sequels to 2001: 2010, 2061, and 3001. No one who's read 3001 seems very excited about it. Like you, I've read the original and two sequels, but not the third.

W. Joe: you give me hope for the future. Futurama is vital for training new geeks to take their place in society.

Happy New Year!
We had an karaoke evening in our pub and i seriously thought about emigration
But after our firework excess, wich got applause from the windows in the street btw. and the nice music the wive of the old commie put on, the world is save from me. Amongst others she played Smokey and Deep Purple wich i haven't heard for at least 20 years.
