Hi,

I was just wondering how to know how well the telephonic interview went?

I had an impression that if the interviewer is satisfied with our performance, he/she usually ends the call saying "We will get back to you". Is this really true?

Also, I heard from few people that if the interview goes for around half an hr or more than that, it is a positive sign.

Can you guys share your experiences of the telephonic interviews you attended and also the tips to guess the feedback after the call?

Thank you.

Trust me. I heard this recently from one of the experienced recruiters and I am referring to the telephonic interview here.

These are just sentences to console oneself and it really does not mean anything from the point of view of the interviewer.

Well you should know the answer about how your telephonic interview went... Nobody else would have side jacked your interview discussions.

Thanks for the reply Jothi. I think the other ranchers can understand the question better and post their view/suggestions.

BTW, if you can read the question again, may be you can understand that I am looking out for the signs that indicate how the feedback would be. Basically, trying to guess how the response would be.

There can be cases where you think you have done an excellent job, but still may not be up to the interviewer's expectations.

There are so many ways in which an interviewer might conduct a phone interview that it's basically impossible to give general advice on this. If you get called back, you get called back, if you don't get called back, well ... you get the idea. It really is that simple. While one would hope that they have the decency to call back even if you won't be considered, it sounds as if that may not be the case in your job market; it certainly would be the case around my parts (and people would call the company after a week or two if they hadn't gotten a reply by then).

well the difference between telephonic interview and face to face interview is only that in telephonic interview you can not see expressions of the interviewer. But to judge your performance of the interview, you need more practice of it. Good or bad interview does not depend on time for which interview went. Some companies do just screening on phone and real interview face to face. Some companies have opposite way. They do full interview on phone which is longer and verification in face to face interview which does not last long.

And to add to it, in most of the interviews, interviewer do not give you any hint. They ask you questions and they fill up the sheet which they submit to HR. Then HR decides it, but you can judge yourself after the interview.

Sorry. I do not know how to guess on the signs that you are looking at. Good luck then! For sure other ranchers would offer better solutions.

I've never interviewed for a job where HR decided my fate. I was always interviewed by the person I would be working for and/or directly under. And sometimes, even by possible team members. My indication on how well my phone interviews go is how long I can keep them on the phone when the interview is complete. Most times I enjoy striking up some small talk at the end. This is especially easy when it is your turn to interview them (which you should be doing).

Case by case it isn't always the same. A pure phone technical interview is just that, Q&A. And that person has no interest in anything else. Those are hard to read however if you know your stuff then you can assume it went well because you were able to answer the questions.

And BTW, this is all based on my XP in the US.

I am talking about India and I am not talking about senior positions. Looking at the post of Kavya, my guess is it is for junior position. For junior positions, it is not necessary the person interviewing you will be your senior. Not necessary for IT service companies when they recruit juniors, they do not have specific project. Many times they will be on bench initially. So not necessary person interviewing would be manager of a candidate. For senior positions yes I agree. But for junior positions they just fill rankings, remarks, sign and submit to HR.

That sounds more like a recruiting firm where you get hired to be contracted out. That's a completely different thing all together when it comes to interviews.

Thanks for all the replies.

As many of you said, we are the one who can know how well the interview went. Tht's right. I agree.

But as I already said, there can be cases where we think we did exceptionally well, but the interviewer's expectations might be totally different.

And this happened with me.

Recently I had three telephonic interviews.

Two of them, I did really great. One was sort of okay, as I could answer only few of the questions, but the answered questions were 100% perfect.

To my surprise, of the first 2 interviews, one was a negative feedback (don't know the exact reason) and the other I didn't hear back. I got the offer from the third interview, which I thought was not that great

This was my experience. So, I was just looking for some sort of indication that the interviewer may leave to know if he/she is satisifed with our performance or if it's going to work out.

I think, once again, you are making an assumption that you're side of it was ok. Have you ever watched American Idol? If not, I'd recommend watching it, finding it online, something. Hundreds of singers come across the audition stage and they honestly believe they can sing when they really can't. I'm not saying anything directly about you. But you can't always assume that because you felt good about, that means you did well. You might believe deep down with all your soul that you did quite well. Doesn't mean you did. Everyone has misconceptions about themselves.
