I would like to convert a powerpoint to html to show as a web page.
I assume I should use POI (http://poi.apache.org/slideshow/index.html).

Do I need powerpoint loaded on my Windows server to convert powerpoint to html using POI?

No, POI does not make use of Office (or any other installed application). I've put some sample code for reading PPT files at http://faq.javaranch.com/java/ReadPowerPoint.

Thanks for your quick reply. That is great info.
Will the sample code work with PowerPoint 2007 .pptx file? According to the POI project site the .pptx is not OLE2 based.

No, that code is for .ppt only, not .pptx. But the APIs are pretty similar; for starters, use org.apache.poi.xslf.XSLFSlideShow instead of HSLSFSlideShow, and then use the classes in org.apache.poi.xslf.* instead of the ones in org.apache.poi.hssf.*
