Java Application or .net App?

Im planning to work on a mini application which I intend to make it an opensource. The application would consist of features such as User authentication, registration, chat, sms, report generation for various statistics.

My question is which platform to chose to develop the app?

1. Im a J2EE programmer comfortable with java technologies. Is it a good idea to chose J2EE ?
2. The other consideration is regarding the hosting of the application. J2EE apps are more expensive to host than .net applications. Is it true?

To give you a more realistic approach - the application is intended to be used for Churches.

Please let me know which approach is more suitable.

Then go with Java, both Java and Java hosting comes with the negligible cost

Spring + Hibernate+ MySQL + Glassfish.

You're asking on a Java forum whether to use Java or .Net? Well, if it is for churches I'd go with Java since Bill Gates is the devil.

In all seriousness though, choose whatever you want. Both are capable of developing simple to robust applications. Also, in all seriousness, Bill Gates is the devil.

Sagar and Gregg, thanks for the response. My only concern was about hosting the J2EE application. The guy at the hosting company advised me to go with ASP or PHP as it is 80% cheaper than hosting a J2EE application.

I have earlier worked on web applications using J2EE, but never worried about the hosting as it is taken care by other departments.

Please correct me if Im wrong anywhere, I just want to explore and gain the knowledge from the experts here.

Did he say ASP or ASP.NET? They are vastly different. I could see where an ASP (or PHP) app would be less costly to host than either ASP.NET or Java EE.

ASP. Considering the higher hosting charges for Java applications, I still go for JavaEE as I have earlier developed web apps using Java technologies and never used ASP or PHP.
Now, why would java hosting expensive than ASP or PHP ? I guess ASP or PHP is much more documented and supported compared to Java. And expertise in managing and administering Java hosting servers are less relatively.

Good guess, but no. Java hosting requires more hardware (memory mainly) and most Java applications aren't "Uncle Fred's Amazing Garden" type web sites and actually require some beef to support the load of users. If I were writing a PHP application that needed to handle the same load as a Java application, rest assured, I would not use cheap public hosting.
