If you are thinking of returning an ArrayList, don't.

Instead, return an array - arrays of the basic variables such as strings or ints are easily understood by web service clients. Nothing can be gained by trying to return an ArrayList. There are simple and convenient methods for getting an Array corresponding to the contents of an ArrayList.
