To all,

Imagine you have a data source that describes a topology (say a master server with 2 slaves, and these slaves have 2 slaves of their own). So, what I'd like to do is have a component that can display such a topology using clickable icons/svg drawings/etc that can display information about the devices (e.g. specs, mins/maxes, etc), that show up someway. The Oracle Hierarchy component set looks almost perfect but I need something open source or something that I can create myself.

If there's no known component set, can anyone provide a hint as to how you would do something like this (e.g. a table with no borders where cells contain the icons and and on-click functionality pops up the information)? I'm very new to web programming and I'm having a hard time visualizing how I would place components on the page without using absolute positions like a native app using screen dimensions (e.g. a container component that's 50% of the screen, how would I know/set icons positions to display the topology within that container).

Any pointers or suggestions is very appreciated,

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
