Happy Birthday JavaRanch!

Somebody pointed out that the JavaRanch domain was first registered on January 26, 1998. That makes JavaRanch 12 years old today.

I like the number 12. It can be divided evenly by so many things.

JavaRanch now serves about 2.1 million people each month with about 6.5 million pageviews.

I think a lot of our traffic boost is thanks to switching over to the new JForum software. That would be the work of Jeanne Boyarsky running point. With Ernest Friedman-Hill and Ulf Dittmer right behind her. And quite a few of the staff contributed to the project.

JForum hums along at about 4% of the server capacity. A massive savings over the old UBB stuff that was hitting 100% several times a day (remember the "pants down" messages?)

On the one year JForum anniversary, just a few weeks ago, Jeanne gave us mobile cabability! I think many of you have already discovered using JavaRanch via your blackberry or iPhone!

Have you noticed a massive improvement in the advertisers at JavaRanch? I think they are quality outfits that are very topical. Do me a favore and check out our sponsors.

A few weeks ago I was using the JavaRanch server to send out some emails to users of my other site (permies.com) when I accidentally sent it to you all instead. Sorry about that! The weird thing is that I got a lot of response from people telling me that stuff was awesome! Well, for those folks: I just uploaded a new video to youtube about a greenhouse with a rocket mass heater and it is already on the "science and technology" "popular" list! I will proudly wear my 10 year old JavaRanch shirt tomorrow to work, and it still fits me just like it was 10 years back. I haven't been around lately but I can still feel the vibe. You know, I haven't forgotten my username / password. This place still has a significant place in my heart.

I would also like to thank the JavaRanch for many, many things. It's helped be be a better developer. I've made some awesome friends (many of whom I'd like to meet in person someday). It helped me adopt my daughter. And honestly, I think that being a moderator has helped me be a better person.

Paul and I have butted heads in the past on various issues, but I think even that was done in a polite, respectful way (I hope he feels the same). So I would like to personally and publicly thank him for all he does here that many folks never see.

There are only two hard things in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors

I'm thrilled to see 10 posters in this thread (above this post) with less than 20 posts here at the ranch. And five who have their very first post in this thread.

To those 5: Whether you registered today to say Happy Birthday or registered some time back and came out of lurker mode to post, it is great to see.
To the 10: You are all what makes JavaRanch special. A friendly place for Java greenhorns.
To the people who haven't posted in some time and came back: Happy memories; it is great to see you again.
