Hi all, today I took the exam of SCJP SE6 and got a score of 100%, I'd like to share my experience with who are planning to take the exam.

It took about 6 weeks for me to prepare, including 4 weeks on the book - SCJP Sun® Certified Programmer for Java™ 6 Study Guide (by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates), and 2 weeks on some mock exams. The book covers all aspects of the exam objectives and I believe that if you don't understand why your answers to the questions in a mock exam are incorrect, you can probably find explanations on the related knowledge in this book. Lastly, during the preparation, I coded extensively to test compilation, exception, code logic etc.

Thank you Kathy and Bert for the book - SCJP Sun® Certified Programmer for Java™ 6 Study Guide, it made me success in passing the exam, and most importantly, I've now had a clearer and greater understanding of Java langauge.

Thank you everyone for sharing your skills and experience in this forum.

Regards,
Ben

Hi Abhi,

The time spent on Kathy & Bert's book, obviously depends individually. For example, your previous experience of Java, your background in software knowledge, such as OO concept, data structure, memory management in Operating system, concurrency computing and so on.

For me, I read the book two times and I spent about 40h a week. I read thoroughly for the first time, when I got confused with some points (either in the chapter content or in the self test), I immedately wrote relevant code, compiled and ran it to clear confusion. The second time I mainly read the content marked by highlighter the first time, focused on difficult concepts and mechanisms. One more point, I spent a lot of time on certifcation summary, self test and two-minute drill in each chapter, they are wonderful excercises and summaries.

Good luck!

Ben,

Congratulations, you deserved the 100% score!

Now that you are the supreme guru, I have a question about a simple point in the SCJP Sun® Certified Programmer for Java™ 6 Study Guide (by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates).

In Chapter 1's Two-Minute Drill, there is this point:

Classes can have only public or default access.

We all know that classes can also be private. My question is whether you found other misleading points in that book that are insidious and can negatively affect the Certification Exam preparation.

I think that's for top level classes.

Yes, that's right and if someone simply followed the book verbatim it would be tough to score 100% like Ben did.

Hi Larry,
I agree with Bobby Chang, public or default access is for top-level classes that can be directly invoked to create its instances or invoked its static members. It's natural for a top-level class to be accessed either from the package it stays (default) or from any other packages in which its subclasses need to visit (public), while the private and protected modifiers for top-level classes have nonsense to apply for the OO concepts such as encapsulation and inheritance, I think. And for the inner class, you can treat it just like a member which has 4 access modifiers.
With regard to the question about the objectives coverage in Kathy and Bert's book, I think it's 100% pursuant to the real exam and when I tried to recall the exam I didn't find any misleading points.

Yes, I know that. However, if you look in Chapter 1 of the book and go to the Two-Minute Drills, under Class Access Modifiers (Objective 1.1) you will see the following statement:

Classes can have only public or default access.

There is no mention of "top-level classes" so the statement implies that no classes can be private.
