I know there are some programs out there, that are displaying excel files. Are those guys using their own APIs to read excel files or android API offers this capability? I am unable to find anything on google. I want to be able to read cells in a excel sheet.

Thanks
Imad

There are no libraries that support reading and writing to excel files, AFAIK. You can consider using third party jars for the same: a team mate of mine is working with jExcelAPI by Andrew Khan..see if that can help.

Apache POI can read Excel format (at least pre-OOXML versions), but I don't know if it works in Android.

On all my mobile devices there's been a separate vendor-supplied spreadsheet application program. Usually a stripped-down version of Excel itself or something similar.

Slightly off-topic, but the OOXML file formats are now part of the officially released POI version as well (as opposed to jExcelApi, for which no OOXML support seems to be forthcoming).

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
