Why is the world like this? Just reading this story about a Bollywood celebrity who made Rs. 5 crore or a little over a million Dollars for a 10 minute appearance at a party- that works out to 100,000 dollars a minute.

What is it about celebrities that people care so much about them? A scientist who dedicates his life, toils in obscurity for the betterment of humanity is not given nearly the same amount of attention and respect he deserves, but a Michael Jackson passes away and the world will obsess about it ad infinitum. The average person won't even notice or care when a nobel prize winner dies. I'm not saying that the media and the masses should worship them the same way they worship celebs, because the nature of their work is different from that of a celeb. But at the same time such disparity in income, respect, and adulation is kind of sickening in my view.

The answer to your question is very simple: people are idiots.

These three simple words help me understand the world around me more than anything I ever learned in school.

My hypothesis is that people are lazy and yet want glory. A celebrity like a singer or actor is easier to aspire to. You may not get as famous as MJ, but if you try hard enough you can get your 15 minutes of fame. Achieving something similar in science is not easy. You also need to invest some effort on learning science to appreciate what a scientist has achieved. Most people just don't have that patience. Why waste time on such hard things, when you can grab a bucket of popcorn and watch a family fight amongst themselves on some reality show?

Because people read such stories and discuss it to death.

So whom would you care for more? A scientist who invented something that made your life (a the life of many others) much easier, or some person who entertains you (and not maybe many more people, since everyone's definition of entertainment may be different) for like an hour or two?

How does wondering why intelligence is not celebrated or given due credit the same way stardom is, lead to more of the same?

I think he meant to say next toilet session and not being a serial potty user of some kind, on the prowl moving from one lavatory to the next as a way to both satisfy a burning desire to sit on and experience newer and previously unused potties and also have more time with celebrities stories.
