For starters, JSP is a templating technology - it should be used to create HTML and other textual output, not to access DBs. You should strongly consider moving any DB code to a backing bean or into a servlet.

Secondly, what do you mean by "searchable DB"? Using SQL's SELECT statement you can search for data in a DB; if that's not what you're looking for, then please provide more detail about what kind of data you intend to search, and how it's organized in the DB.
